How To Get Rid Of Silverfish From Your Home

How to get rid of silverfish from your home is very important if you are currently suffering from a silverfish infestation. If you have found these pesky and annoying little bugs scaring you in the middle of the night you might just want to learn how to get rid of silverfish once and for all. And if you have found one or two silverfish you can be assured there are many more where they came from.

First of all silverfish are tear-shaped, blue-gray insects that wiggle like a fish out of water and do not have any wings. They like to eat all kinds of things like wallpaper paste, food, books, magazines, dandruff, glue, cereal and many other things in your home.

Following is a list of 12 ideas of how to get rid of silverfish in your home.

1. Around the outside of your home check for warm, moist environments where silverfish can thrive. Places like under mulch, under shake roofs and siding and under rocks or wet piles of leaves. If you find silverfish you can spray them with insecticide or dispose of them.

2. Check for cracks or holes from outside your house going into your basement, crawl space or attic. Seal these cracks with caulking or spray foam insulation.

3. Place all food, papers, books and clothing in plastic containers with tightly sealed lids to keep the silverfish insects out.

4. Keep your home as dry and humidity free as possible. Silverfish love dark, moist areas.

5. Run a dehumidifier or air conditioner to dry the air out and make it more difficult for silverfish to thrive.

6. Immediately fix any leaky faucets or pipes because they contribute moisture to the air which only attracts more and more silverfish bugs.

7. Remove any standing water areas outside and inside your home because it attracts silverfish insects.

8. Find the narrow crevice attachment to your vacuum and use it regularly. Vacuum under furniture and along any cracks and crevices leading from the inside of your house to the outside.

9. If you find books that look like they have been chewed on you can stop further damage. Place the books in a plastic bag with silica gel, seal them and place them in your freezer for three days. This will kill any remaining silverfish and protect your books from further damage.

10. Make sure all wallpaper is sealed along the edges so silverfish can't get underneath it and start eating it.

11. Clean your home regularly. Sweeping floors and dusting daily will help prevent silverfish bugs from flourishing in your home.

12. If you choose to use pesticides make sure to follow the instructions closely and if you have children or pets make sure they won't be harmed.

You can control silverfish bugs in your home or apartment by following these simple methods above. You want to make your home less of a recreation facility for them by making their living conditions much more difficult. This includes decreasing their access to water, lowering the humidity in your home and cutting off any possible food supply.
