Silverfish, or lepisma saccharina, are an invasive species of arthropods, like the cockroach. They have a hard exoskeleton that protects them from many attacks.
They haven't always been a household pest. In the outdoors, they live in warm mulch piles and under leaves, but their preference for warm, dark, damp places have brought them indoors into our laundry rooms, bathrooms, basements and under our kitchen sink.

Silverfish are drawn to foods high in starch and polysaccharides. Polysaccharide is commonly found in the epoxy glue that binds books together. Combined with the tightness of the pages, and the darkness found there, old book shelves and stored boxes of books are ideal living grounds for colonies of silverfish. Imagine flipping through a box of old family photographs, only to find a whole new family has taken them for their home!
Silverfish also will eat silk, linen and cotton clothing, so even your closet isn't safe! Soaps, shampoos, and other bathroom products such as shaving cream are nutritious to these pests.
Another important thing to understand about silverfish is that they prefer living environments with a high moisture level. Silverfish don't need very much water to survive, and even the condensation that gathers on the cold pipe under your kitchen sink is enough to sustain them and makes your kitchen an ideal living place. While you will never be able to fully prevent all moisture outbreaks in your home, there are things that you can do to limit the silverfish's access to the moisture.
